Lady Oilers climb atop 22-6A leaderboard

PEARLAND — There are only three District 22-6A games left for the 2015 season and if the Pearland Lady Oilers win two of the three, they will capture the league crown.

In all likelihood, they should win out as they have Sam Rayburn, Pasadena Memorial, and Manvel on the schedule.

Pearland (16-6, 1-1) never was threatened by these three teams in the first round beating Rayburn (11-1), Memorial (5-1), and Manvel (16-0).

The Lady O's solidified their first-place last week with a 9-1 win over Dawson and 6-0 victory over Alvin.

Pearland and Alvin entered their contest tied for the league lead and Pearland's win put them in the driver's seat to capture the district championship.

Dawson hosted the Lady Oilers in their second round contest on the bubble to stay in the playoff hunt while Pearland has already secured their place in the post-season.

In their first meeting ever in the opening round, Pearland put down the Lady Eagles 10-0 in five innings.

The second round was a little closer despite Dawson falling 9-1. But the game did make it the full seven innings though the outcome was still the same.

The Lady Eagles managed to load the bases three different times but Pearland pitcher Alyssa Denham put out each fire surrendering only one unearned run in the bottom of the third while allowing only three hits, three walks, and fanning nine.

Dawson's Kaylan Howard took the loss after allowing six hits, seven runs, and five walks in 3.1 innings. Gabrielle Chacon pitched 3.2 innings and allowed one hit, two runs, and two walks.

Pearland scored a run in the top of the second, three in the third, two in the sixth and three in the seventh frame.

Top hitters for Pearland were Lindsay Steward (2-fo-3, two runs scored) and Sydney Gutierrez (3-for-3, one run scored, 3 RBIs).

Pearland 6 - Alvin 0

Junior pitcher Alyssa Denham struck out 12 and allowed only three hits to pick up the 6-0 shutout win over the Alvin Yellowjackets vaulting the Lady Oilers all alone at the top of the District 22-6A race.

Pearland scored a run in the bottom of the first, two in the second, one in the third and put the game out of reach with two in the sixth.

Leadoff hitter Lindsay Stewart was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI on two singles.

Sydney McKay was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Pearland finished with 11 hits to improve to 12-1 in district and 17-6 overall.

The Lady Oilers will host Pasadena Memorial on Friday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. and will close out the regular season on Friday, April 24 at Manvel at 6:30 p.m. If Pearland wins two of the next three, they are assured of at least a district co-championship. If they win out, they secure sole possession of the league title.
