Shadow Creek picked to win District 23-6A title

SHADOW CREEK — Shadow Creek moved up to Class 6A last season after spending two years in Class 5A, capturing the 5A Division I state title in 2019 and compiling a two-year 31-1 record with their only loss in the state title game in 2018.

The Sharks were picked to win the 23-6A championship last year, but someone forgot to tell the Dawson Eagles who went undefeated in league action (7-0) while the Sharks finished in second place.

Shadow Creek also opened up the season with two straight losses and finished 6-4 while advancing to the 6A Div. II region semifinals.

The 2021 season has the Sharks once again selected to win the 23-6A crown based on three offensive and three defensive starters while returning 28 lettermen.

One of the biggest vacancies comes at quarterback with the loss of All-State signal-caller Kyron Drones who is now at Baylor.

Head coach Brad Butler doesn't have to look any further that his own son, Duke (6-1, 170, 4.6), to lead the offense. The younger Butler (198 yards, 3 TDs passing), who will be a junior, looks to follow in his father's footsteps as the elder Butler was an All-State QB at Brownsville High School his senior year.

It is no secret that the Sharks have a lot of talent on the team.

Butler will look for RB Kelvon Brown (5-10, 190), WR Lawrence Armstrong (6-1, 175, 4.5), WR Josh Best (5-10, 175, 4.6) and WR Tylik Burton (5-9, 160, 4.6) to provide firepower on offense.

Armstrong had 16 catches for 276 yards and six TDs receiving while Brown rushed for 765 yards and eight scores las season.

The offensive line will need to be rebuilt around Dylan Hughes (5-11, 275) and Zach Rymer (6-3, 300) while Meyson Colbert (6-2, 275) and Cameron Jones (6-4, 295) will need to step up and contribute this season.

The Sharks will have a stronger defense to begin the season with the following players providing leadership on that side of the ball.

They are: DB DeJuan Lewis (5-11, 180, 4.5), DL Josh Diaz (6-2, 250, 4.9), DL Theorin Randle (6-2, 240, 4.9), DB Jaidan Scott (6-2, 190), DB Jakori Wilson, DL Jayden Madkins (6-4, 290), DB Javion Anderson (5-11,170), DB Nick Hudson (5-11, 175), and LB Scott Koumado.

Lewis will be one of the leaders on the defense as he had 66 tackles last season with one interception. Diaz and Randle will anchor the defensive line.

The defensive secondary will be young, but extremely talented with speed. The big question will be the linebackers who will be young and inexperienced.
