Shadow Creek has challenging start to 2021 season

SHADOW CREEK — There may not be another 6A team in the state that will have a more challenging start to the 2021 football season than the Shadow Creek Sharks.

The Sharks open the season against the North Shore Mustangs who have won the Class 6A Div. I state title the last two out of three years and finished 14-1 last season with their only loss in the 6A Div. I state semifinals.

Next, will be a very young school, the Bridgeland Bears, who finished the 2020 season at 12-1 while advancing to the 6A region finals.

The Sharks will complete their non-district schedule against the Cypress Woods Wildcats (6-4) who advanced to the bi-district round of the playoffs.

Those three teams had a 32-6 combined record for 2020 with all three advancing to the post-season.

Shadow Creek finished 6-4 while advancing to the 6A Region III semifinals.

North Shore Mustangs

Friday, August 27, 7:00 p.m.
Freedom Field

North Shore is once again picked to win the District 21-6A title and ranked No. 4 in the state in the pre-season rankings. The Mustangs should make another deep run in the playoffs.

North Shore returns five offensive and eight defensive starters with 39 returning lettermen.

The biggest challenge will replacing four-year starting quarterback Dematrius Davis, who departed for Auburn, on offense, but the Mustangs still will have a very talented and athletic team.

They will have a talented receiving corps in WR Jhalyn Bailey (6-2, 210, 4.5) who had 26 catches for 616 yards and 7 TDs while WR David Amador (6-0, 170, 4.5) caught 23 passes for 631 yards and 4 TDs.

RB Xavier Owens, who had 712 yards rushing and five TDs, will headline the ground attack.

Others on offense include OL Omarion Dudley, OL Talmadge Pounds, and OL Anthony Bates.

Defense will be the strength for the Mustangs while giving the offense a change to get experience.

Leading the way defensively is DB Denver Harris (6-0, 185, 4.4) who had 54 tackles and 6 INTs last year. Joining him is DL Kristopher Ryan-Ross (6-3, 270) who had 62 tackles, 11 TFLs, and 8 sacks, and LB Kent Battle (5-10, 215, 4.7) who had 111 tackles, 18 TFL, and 10 sacks,

Other defensive standouts will be DB Jacoby Davis (6-0, 210, 4.8), LB Dillon Dixon, DB Caleb Flagg, DB Ta'Von Griffin, DL Tai Leonard, and DL Ronald Wilson.

Prediction: North Shore 35 - Shadow Creek 14

Bridgeland Bears

Saturday, September 4, 6:00 p.m.
FCU Stadium

The Bridgeland Bears will have four offensive and five defensive starters returning with 28 lettermen on a team picked to win the District 16-6A crown.

Bridgeland edged Shadow Creek last season 29-21 in a hard-fought contest.

The Bears advanced to the 6A Region III Div. II semifinals in only their third year as a new school. Though they had several standouts graduate -- the cupboard is far from empty.

Senior QB Conner Weigman (6-2, 210, 4.7) threw for 3,803 yards and 42 TDs while rushing for 665 yards and 9 TDs. He will be joined by WR Andrew Maleska (5-11, 170, 4.6) who caught 40 passes for 525 yards and 7 TDs while RB Mason Culton rushed for 859 yards and 9 TDs.

Defensively, the Bears will be fast and quick led by DB Terrance Cullivan (6-0, 185, 4.5) who had 27 tackles and one sack while DB Graham Gillespie (6-0, 195, 4.6) had 35 stops and 1 INT.

The defensive line is experienced and led by DL Nathan Earle (6-0, 280) and DE Charles McKnight (6-1, 250). Others who will contribute include LB Hudson Hooper (6-3, 210), LB Caleb Fattig, DB Joshua Ryan, and DB Ross Pohmeyer.

Prediction: Shadow Creek 24 - Bridgeland 21

Cypress Woods Wildcats

Friday, September 10, 7:00 p.m.
FCU Stadium

Shadow Creek didn't get to play Cypress Woods last season because of the pandemic, but will face the Wildcats this season.

Cy-Woods has five offensive and six defensive starters returning with 20 returning lettermen from a 6-4 team in 2020 that advanced to the bi-district round of the playoffs. The Wildcats are a pre-season team on the bubble to make the playoffs. The right district wins can extend their season.

ATH Trey Craft (5-10, 185, 4.6) will be moved to QB as he accounted for over 700 yards of offense last season. Other skill people include WR Philip White (5-11, 195, 4.5), WR Conner Morris, and WR Charles Bain. RB Myles West (5-10, 175, 4.5) will lead the ground attack.

OL Duke Leonard (6-5, 270) will anchor the line with OL Cameron Yoakem.

The defense will be led by LB Dylan Rogers (6-3, 235, 4.7) as he had 70 tackles, 8 TFL, 3 sacks last season while DL Grant Ladner (6-3, 245, 4.8) had 30 stops, 10 TFL, 2 sacks, and 1 INT. Junior DL Terrance Green (6-5, 260, 4.6) will also be a force as he played late last year.

Others on defense include LB Juan Rojas (6-0, 245, 4.9), DL Anthony Perez (5-11, 245, 4.9), DB Josh Jones, DB Will Price, and LB Sebastian Bruges.

Prediction: Shadow Creek 28 - Cy-Woods 17
