Shadow Creek outlasts Dawson 45-31

SHADOW CREEK — The game between Shadow Creek and Dawson was going to be a first step toward the District 23-6A title for the winner.

Dawson, who won the 23-6A crown last season, beat Shadow Creek last year 31-28 in overtime in the first ever game between the two schools. But this year, the Sharks had just too many weapons and depth to get the 45-31 victory.

The first half was a battle as many expected as Dawson got on the scoreboard first with a 33-yard run by Bryce Burgess followed by a PAT by Carter Brown for the 7-0 lead with 9:30 left in the opening quarter.

Dawson recovered a surprise onside kick and settled for a 19-yard field goal by Brown after the drive stalled at the Shadow Creek five-yard line with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter.

But the Sharks had an answer as QB Duke Butler hit Jo'Qwan West on an 11-yard scoring strike with 2:41 left in the first period to close the game to 10-7.

However, the Eagles quickly make the score 17-7 on the final play of the opening stanza as Burgess burned the Sharks on another 33-yard scoring dash while Brown hit the PAT.

The second quarter belonged to the Sharks as they scored 10 unanswered points as Butler scored on a 7-yard QB keeper and Matt Allison booted a 21-yard field goal as the first half came to a close sending both teams to the dressing room at intermission with the score tied 17-17.

The Eagles scored on their first possession of the third quarter when QB Colin Johnson hit Ashton Stroman on a 63-yard catch and run for a touchdown to give the Eagles a 24-17 advantage.

But the Sharks would take over the third period with 21 unanswered points to build a 38-24 lead.

Shadow Creek running back Felix Buchanan would score two times on runs of 38 and 3-yards and Josh Best would score on a 5-yard pass from Butler with 2:25 left in the third.

The scoring parade would continue in the fourth quarter as Buchanan would score his third touchdown of the game on a 15-yard scamper with 10:37 left in the final quarter for a 45-24 lead.

With 5:35 remaining in the game, the Eagles would score on a 9-yard run by Tony Roberson III. Brown booted the PAT and the final score was posted 45-31.

Shadow Creek finished with 503 yards of total offense compared to 384 yards for Dawson.

Butler was 11-for-17 passing for 164 yards and two TDs while rushing for 51 yards on 11 carries and one score.

Tylik Burton had 16 carries for 161 yards while Buchanan had 12 totes for 125 yards and three TDs.

Josh Best had four catches for 67 yards and a score while West had three grabs for 34 yards and one TD.

Johnson was 11-of-14 passing for 154 yards and one TD.

Burgess had 18 carries for 207 yards rushing and two TDs.

Stroman had seven catches for 102 yards and one TD while Ryan Guillo had five grabs for 52 yards.
