Pearland girls cross country runners receive awards
The 2007 Pearland High School girls cross country team enjoyed a wonderful evening at Joe's Bar-B-Q in Alvin in celebration of a great season. Head coach Lori Ziegelmeyer expressed her appreciation for all the girls and the effort they gave this past year. Several girls received awards for their overall performance. The awards presented were: New Junior Varsity coach Brandy Woods presented the Junior Varsity Award that went to sophomore Bianca Garcia.
The Academic Award was presented to the varsity runner who had the highest grade point average. Two seniors shared the award. Co-Captain Barbie Blair is ranked 31st out of 1,038 seniors with a 4.91 GPA and senior manager Victoria Brame who is ranked 25th and has a 5.0 GPA. The Oiler Pride Award represents the highest ideal of what it means to be a Pearland Lady Oiler and have Oiler pride. Four runners were honored and they were: junior Erin Cunningham, sophomore Brittany Crisp, senior Ashley Maniet, and junior Rachel Strong. The Fighting Heart Award is given to the cross country athlete who has that never-say-die spirt. Four runners shared this award. They were: freshman Andrea Meado, sophomore Brittany Crisp, freshman Stacy Carroll, and junior Lisa Rankin. The Allison Long Most Inspirational Award is named after a former Lady Oiler who was an outstanding runner at PHS. Long has returned to speak to the girls in recent years. The winners were: senior Jessica Galindo and senior Barbie Blair.
The "MVP" Award goes to the outstanding runner for 2007. The winner was freshman Courtney Mose who follows in the steps of her two older sisters, Carranda and Christina, who also won the award. The two older sisters now run for the University of Texas at Arlington. Mose earned eight individual medals during the season. She had one second place finish, five third place finishes, one fifth place finish, and a ninth place finish. Mose placed ninth at the district meet while qualifying for the Region III meet as a freshman. Mose was also in the same district as the runners from Brazoswood and Alvin who placed first and fourth at the state meet. "I'm really excited about next season," Ziegelmeyer said. "I think we should be very strong and I hope the athletes that are coming back next year will run in the summer and report in good condition." |
