No. 3 Dawson edges No. 4 Manvel 54-50 in district showdown

The last time the Dawson Lady Eagles dropped a game this year was in the opening round of district action when they lost to the Manvel Lady Mavericks 66-58.

Dawson avenged that game last week when they edged Manvel 54-50 to extend their winning streak to 15 straight to move into second place in the district standing at 8-1 behind new No. 4 state-ranked Shadow Creek who sits a game ahead at 9-1.

Manvel's loss dropped them from No. 3 in the state to No. 14.

Dawson led by double figures for most of the first half as they built a 16-8 lead after the first quarter.

The Lady Eagles increased the lead in the second quarter for a 30-16 advantage at intermission.

Manvel couldn't make get much closer at the end of the third period as Dawson maintained a 41-29 lead entering the final eight minutes.

However, the Lady Mavs made a game of it down the stretch as a series of turnovers by the Lady Eagles began to open the door for a comeback run.

Manvel got as close as three points in the final quarter, but Dawson was able to hold on for the 54-50 district win.

Dawson's Faith Etienne led the Lady Eagles offensively as she scored a game-high 17 points while hitting 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

Kendall Ford and Journey Lovett provided added support on offense as each scored 11 points each.

Manvel was led by Khloe Yarborough who tossed in 15 points.
