Dawson rolls past Alvin 35-21


DAWSON — With a win over the Alvin Yellowjackets, the Dawson Eagles could punch their ticket to the post-season for the 13th straight year which they did with the 35-21 win.

The Eagles came out at the start of the game to dominate Alvin and they did exactly that.

Dawson took the opening kickoff to their own 28 and used a 7-play, 72-yard drive to score on 7-yard run by Bryce Burgess for a 7-0 lead with 9:04 left in the first quarter.

However, instead of the usual kickoff by Carter Brown that would go into the end zone, Brown executed the perfect onside kick that caught Alvin off guard and was recovered by the Eagles at the Dawson 48.

Dawson used a 9-play, 52-yard drive to score again capped off by a 1-yard plunge by Tony Roberson III to make the score 14-0 with 5:08 left in the first period.

Alvin finally got on the scoreboard with 10:05 left in the second quarter when Daniel Blume scored on an 18-yard run to cut the lead to 14-7.

Dawson fumbled on their next possession after going on a 64-yard, 9-play drive that end on Alvin's 1-yard line with the miscue.

Alvin was forced to punt after three plays and Dawson started the next drive at their on 42.

Two plays later, the Eagles found the end zone again as QB Colin Johnson hit Ashton Stroman on a short pass and the wide receiver jitter bugged his way 38-yards for the score and a 21-7 lead with 3:31 left in the second frame.

Dawson would intercept the ball at the Alvin 20 and Burgess would score his second TD with 2:03 left before intermission for a 28-7 advantage.

The two teams traded scores in the third quarter as Alvin scored on n 11-yard run and then Dawson responded with a sensational 79-yard scoring pass from Johnson to Stroman to make the score 35-14 with 55 seconds remaining in the third.

Alvin added one more score with 1:05 left in the game to post the 35-21 final score.

Johnson was 11-of-16 for 233 yards and two TDs.

Burgess had nine carries for 91 yards for two scores while Jason Palacio had eight totes for 55 yards.

Stroman had five catches for 179 yards and two TDs while Ryan Guillo had three grabs for 32 yards.

Dawson will travel to Crump Stadium to play Alief Elsik on Thursday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m.
