Dawson outlasts Alvin in back-and-forth district battle

Alvin entered Pearland ISD Stadium out of the playoff race but with their eye on making it difficult for Dawson in their hopes of making the post-season.

The Eagles are on track to advance to the playoffs after facing the Yellowjackets in a tough 58-35 district win to improve to 6-3 overall.

But don't let the final score deceive you as Alvin put up a much greater battle than the final score indicated.

The Jackets had the lead three times in the first half only to see the Eagles tie up the game three times.

Alvin got the opening kickoff at their own 48 and used 12 plays to find the end zone to complete the 52-yard scoring drive for a 7-0 lead with 5:03 left in the opening quarter.

It took only one play for Dawson to score as they took the ensuing kickoff at their own 36. RB Jerimiah Treadaway took the handoff, broke through the middle of the Alvin defense, and sped 64-yards to paydirt. The snap on the PAT was mishandled leaving the Jackets with a 7-6 lead with 4:53 left in the first period.

Alvin responded with a 8-play, 53-yard scoring drive to make the score 14-6 with :25 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Again, the Eagles quickly responded with a 5-play, 70-yard drive capped off with a 30-yard scoring pass from QB Max Zavala to WR Rodney Bonham. Dawson opted for a two-point conversion which was good by Corey Brown to knot up the score 14-14 with 10:30 left in the second quarter.

Once again, Alvin wasn't going away as they mounted a 13-play, 67-yard scoring drive to take the lead again 21-14 with 3:05 remaining before the end of the half.

Not wasting any time, Dawson took only three plays to go for a touchdown to tie up the game 21-21 as Zavala hit Brown on a 61-yard scoring bomb with 1:30 left in the half. Ayden Treadaway booted the PAT.

After a quick three and out by Alvin, the Eagles go the ball on the Jackets' 39 after a very short punt.

With under 10 seconds left in the half, Ayden Treadaway nailed a 39-yard field goal giving the Eagles a 24-21 lead at intermission.

The second half was a different story as the Eagles regrouped and outscored the Jackets 34-14.

fBoth teams scored 14 points in the third quarter as Dawson scored first, was matched by Alvin, and then Dawson and Alvin repeated the scoring again to send the game to the fourth quarter with the Eagles slightly ahead 38-35.

Scoring for Dawson in the third was Jerimiah Treadaway who scored on a 19-yard run and Bonham who scored on the ensuing kickoff 78 yards following the Alvin touchdown to make the score 38-28 with 4:04 remaining in the third period.

After Alvin scored late in the third to make it a three point game, the Eagles reeled off 20 unanswered points to make the final score 58-35.

Dawson scored three times in the final period on a 1-yard plunge by Brown, a 1-yard run by Jerimiah Treadaway, and a 12-yard scamper by Treadaway giving him four touchdowns on the night.

The Eagles finished the game with 400 total yards compared to 326 yards for Alvin.

Zavala was 10-of-11 passing for 179 yards and two TDs.

Jerimiah Treadaway had 18 carries for 227 yards and four TDs.

Brown had seven catches for 127 yards and one score.

Ayden Treadaway hit 5-of-6 PATs with his one miss that was caused by a bad snap.

Dawson (6-3, 5-2) will travel to Freedom Field to face the Manvel Mavericks (4-4, 4-2) on Friday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m.
