Lady Mustangs punch ticket to the playoffs

Friendswood's Helen Byrd scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the 41-26 win over district rival Santa Fe.

As the regular season is winding down, the Friendswood Lady Mustangs entered the game versus Santa Fe in a two-way tie for third place at 5-4. Angleton lost to La Porte which clinched a playoff berth for the Lady 'Stangs.

After beginning district action with a 2-4 mark in the opening round, Friendswood has won four consecutive league games to secure their place in the post-season.

Both teams had trouble finding their scoring range until Friendswood finally scored a free throw with 1:45 left in the first period. The Lady Mustangs managed three more points to post a 4-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same for both teams as Friendswood managed to lead at halftime 11-7.

The Lady Stangs used the third quarter to surge ahead 14-8 and a 25-15 lead entering the final period.

Friendswood and Santa Fe both scored six points each early in the fourth quarter before the Lady Mustangs found the range to outscore the Lady Indians with a 9-0 run to increase the margin to 40-21 with two minutes to go in the game.

The final score ended up being 41-26.

Leading scorers for Friendswood was Helen Byrd (13 points, seven boards), Tanner Hopkings (10 points,), Mabry Venables (eight points, 10 rebounds), and Claire Radtke (five points, 10 rebounds).
