Fulshear blows past Friendswood 46-14

FRIENDSWOOD — The 2022 playoff picture is beginning to take shape and Friendswood finds themselves with their backs against the wall after getting beat 46-14 by the Fulshear Chargers in a critical District 10-5A Div I showdown.

The Mustangs are now 3-4 on the season and 2-3 in district with five teams who have only one loss in the league standings.

"I still say five (wins) is the magic number (to make the playoffs), and we have two district wins with three games left," Friendswood head coach Robert Koopmann said. "I'm not good at math, but that adds up to five…We'll worry about the Terry Rangers, and worry about the other two (Angleton and Magnolia West) after that."

For the Mustangs to advance to the post-season -- they will more than likely need to win the next three games to have that opportunity.

The game against Fulshear was critical for Friendswood, but the Chargers left little doubt who was going to win this game.

Fulshear put Friendswood in a 22-0 hole before the end of the first quarter.

It took only 45 seconds into the game for Fulshear to get on the scoreboard following the opening kickoff as running back Davon Godley scored on a 47-yard run. The two-point conversion was good by Seth Smith making the score 8-0.

Friendswood would get real familiar with Godley as he finished the contest with 22 carries for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

Fulshear took advantage of a muffed punt by the Mustangs on fourth down that gave the Chargers offense the ball at the Friendswood 29.

It took only seven plays for Calvion Hunter to blast his way across the goal line on a 5-yard run for a touchdown. Godley added the two-point conversion for a 16-0 lead with 3:36 remaining in the opening quarter.

Fulshear's Ty Powell came up with an interception on Friendswood's ensuing drive and a couple of plays later, the Chargers scored again on a 36-yard run by Godley with 1:27 left in the opening stanza. The two-point conversion was no good leaving Fulshear with a 22-0 advantage.

With 8:17 left in the second quarter, Friendswood finally crossed the pay station as Jackson Rhodes scored on a 58-yard touchdown jaunt. The PAT was blocked leaving the Chargers with a 22-6 lead.

Neither team could muster much offense until the Chargers got a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to make the score 25-6 at intermission.

The Friendswood offense was able to penetrate the Fulshear 25 on two different times in the second quarter, but the Chargers were able to thwart the Mustang threats with two interceptions.

The third quarter produced no points for either team, but the Mustangs closed the gap to 25-14 when QB Mikey Butler hit WR Aiden Stokes on a 58-yard scoring strike with 11:28 left in the final period.

Fulshear responded on its ensuing possession with a nine-play, 70-yard TD drive capped by a 7-yard TD run by Godley. Smith ran in the two-point conversion for a 33-14 lead.

With 4:10 left in the fourth quarter Patrick Broadway scored on a 9-yard TD run for a 39-14 lead and then the Chargers closed out the scoring with 50 seconds remaining on a 3-yard scoring plunge by Smith to make the final score 46-14.

The final Fulshear score was set up by the Chargers fifth interception of the game.

"The defense actually played well for a couple of quarters until we just ran out of gas," Koopmann said. "Once we took their first few punches, we got back into it, but we weren't running right routes, we weren't blocking right, our quarterback's not making the right reads. Offensively, we made just about every mistake you can make, and it put our defense in a bind."

The Mustangs will host the Terry Rangers on Friday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Henry Winston Stadium for Homecoming in a must-win district contest.
