No. 2 state-ranked A&M Consolidated eliminates Friendswood

Friendswood ended a two-year absence from the post-season but had to face the No.2 Class 5A Div I team in the state where they were quickly eliminated from the playoffs 62-20.

Instead of focusing on the loss, Friendswood fans need to look at how the team began the 2024 season and where they ended up.

Most would have bet against the Mustangs after a 1-5 start this season, but second-year head coach Jordan Johnson kept the team together as they won their final four district games to finish the regular season at 5-5 which vaulted them into the playoffs this year snapping a two-year absence.

Johnson is committed to changing the culture at Friendswood and it takes longer that two years to do so. The 'Stangs finished 5-5 the first year under the former Friendswood alum and 5-5 this year.

So the progress continues as Johnson sees his players buying into his brand of football.

One thing that the College Station A&M Tigers (11-0) showed the Mustangs is that they are at a different level which is where Johnson wants his team to eventually strive to be.

Friendswood gave it their best against a state champion level program. In fact, the Mustangs held the lead until the 9:09 mark of the second quarter, when A&M Consolidated went back ahead 13-7 on a TD pass, but the Mustangs evened the score at 13-alll in the middle of the second period on a 2-yard QB keeper by Mikey Butler.

But the talented Tigers seized the momentum by ending the first half with three unanswered scores to take a 34-13 lead into the halftime intermission.

A&M swelled its lead to 48-12 before the Mustangs got back across the pay station with 3:01 left in the third quarter on a blocked punt which the Mustangs scooped up to score which would be the final touchdown that the Mustangs would make against the Tigers in the 62-20 loss.

Friendswood was ahead 7-6 in the opening quarter when RB Walker Winters scored on a 1-yard plunge. The touchdown was set up thanks to a Mustang interception.

The Mustangs close out the year as the No. 4 seed out of District 11-5A-I to finish with a 5-6 overall mark.
