Manvel sweeps Friendswood boys and girls teams


MANVEL — The Manvel Mavericks took out the Friendswood Mustangs 55-43 in a District 22-5A contest.

The win by the Mavericks improves their season mark to 13-11 and 6-1 in district while the Mustangs fall to 8-11 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Manvel opened up the first quarter to take a 15-8 lead and then stretched the advantage with 21 points in the second period while holding Friendswood to 11 points for a 36-19 halftime lead.

The Mavs took the third quarter 9-7 for a 45-26 lead entering the final period.

Friendswood made a comeback with 17 points in the fourth quarter while the Mavs were held to 10 points, but it was too little too late as Manvel won the game 55-43.

Manvel 62 - Friendswood 27

The No. 3 state-ranked Manvel girls were not challenged by the Friendswood Lady Mustangs and the Lady Mavs easily defeated the Lady 'Stangs 62-27 in a District 22-5A contest.

The Lady Mavs began by taking the opening period 13-7 and then increased the lead to 20-6 in the second quarter for a 33-13 halftime advantage.

Manvel extended their lead with a 17-4 third quarter for a 50-17 lead before coasting in the fourth period 12-10 for the lopsided 62-27.

Friendswood was led in scoring by Kamila Yunus who scored 12 points and 10 rebounds and Claire Radke who added nine points.

Manvel improves to 25-2 overall and 8-0 in district while Friendswood drops to 11-11 on the season and 5-2 in league play.
