MANVEL — The game between Manvel and Fort Bend Marshall was billed as the game between the unbeatens as both teams entered the District 23-5A showdown at 5-0 on the season.
Manvel sent a message to the rest of their league foes you had better show up with your A game if you expect to challenge the No. 1 area-ranked team and No. 4 in the state.
The game was never close as the Mavericks scored early and often to take a 49-6 lead at halftime.
Even after Marshall scored their lone touchdown with only 13 seconds left to go in the half to make the score 42-6 following a missed PAT, the Mavs let the Buffaloes know they were still in control as Cecori Tolds took the ensuing kickoff 70-yards for another score with no time on the clock at intermission.
Manvel added two more scores in the third quarter as Arik Bennett caught a 20-yard scoring toss from QB Kason Martin making the score 56-6 and they Anthony Lindsey scored on a 30-yard blocked punt with 4:30 left to go in the third period to put the finishing touch on Marshal 63-6 as Manvel head coach Kirk Martin emptied the bench in the lopsided victory.
Cam Scott got things started in the first quarter with a 62-yard scoring jaunt to begin the parade of points. Luis Moreno booted the first of nine extra points to give the Mavs a quick 7-0 lead at the 7:19 mark.
Caleb Jolivette used his sprinters speed to race 67-yards for the second Manvel score and a 14-0 lead.
Jalen Preston hooked up with Martin on a 57-yard scoring bomb early in the second quarter for a 21-0 lead.
Deneric Prince scored Manvel's next possession on a 7-yard run to increase the lead to 28-0.
Scott added his second touchdown of the game on a 7-yard scoring toss from Martin for a 35-0 advantage.
Sam Smith made the score 42-0 when he scored on a 5-yard plunge.
The first half closed with the two teams trading scores for a 49-6 halftime Manvel lead.
The Mavs defense limited Marshall to only 207 total yards while posting 425 yards.
Martin was 9-of-13 for 127 yards and three TDs.
Jolivette had four carries for 85 yards and a TD. Scott had one carry for 62 yards and a score. Prince had six totes for 46 yards and a score. Smith had seven carries for 33 yards and a TD. Matthew Goodson had five carries for 40 yards.
Preston had one catch for 57 yards and a TD. Bennett had three grabs for 35 yards and a score.
Manvel (6-0) will travel to face the Elkins Knights (2-4, 2-1) on Friday, Oct. 14 at Hall Stadium at 7:00 p.m. in another district showdown that could end up deciding the district title as the rest of the league schedule doesn't present too much of a problem for the Mavericks with Texas City (3-3, 2-1), Santa Fe (2-4, 0-3), and Galena Park (2-4, 0-3) remaining on the district schedule.
