Pearland falls to Strake Jesuit 77-72 in 4 OTs


PEARLAND — It looked like Strake Jesuit would get the win in regulation, but there was no quit in the Pearland basketball team as they tied up the game 52-52 thanks to a last second basket by Charles Clark.

The two teams were tied 12-12 after the opening quarter while Strake Jesuit took the second period 9-8 for a 21-20 halftime lead.

Clay Page paced the scoring for the Oilers with a pair of 3-pointers and a free throw while Cameron Love Adams added eight points.

Pearland was 3-of-7 from the free throw line in the first half.

The third quarter was the biggest offensive showing for both teams as Strake outscored the Oilers 17-16 to make the score 38-36.

Page scored seven points while four other players scored points for Pearland.

The offense continued for both teams and with Strake leading 52-49 and just seconds left in the game, Clark hit his clutch 3-pointer with a few ticks on the game clock to leave Pearland tied with the Crusaders 52-52 at the buzzer.

The game played an extra frame and after four minutes, the two teams were still tied at 57-57.

The second overtime produced the same results as both teams were still tied at 62-62.

The third overtime again finished tied at 68-68 to go to a fourth overtime.

This time, the Crusaders turned things up a notch and outscored the Oilers 9-4 to get the 77-72 district win.

The Oilers had a disappointing showing at the free throw line hitting only 7-of-16.

Clark led Pearland in scoring with 22 points while Page tossed in 16, Bridges scored 14, and Love-Adams scored 10.

Pearland is now 20-9 overall and 6-3 in the District 23-6 standings.
