Lady Eagles slip past Alief Taylor 59-50

PEARLAND DAWSON— After building a lead early in the fourth quarter over the Alief Taylor Lady Lions, the Dawson Lady Eagles had to hold on in the final three minutes to get a 59-50 district win.

Dawson entered the game needing a league win after dropping their first 4-of-5 to start the first round.

The Lady Eagles (15-12, 2-4) lost to Alief Hastings, Alief Elsik, Pearland, and George Ranch while getting a win over Brazoswood so the win over Taylor was a move in the right direction for head coach Isabel Gomez and her girls if they hope to make the playoffs.

Taylor took the first quarter 13-12, but the Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Lions late in the second quarter 15-12 for a 27-26 halftime lead.

While Dawson hit nine 2-pointers, they struggled at the free throw line hitting 5-of-11.

The Lady Eagles built a lead in the third period outscoring the visitors 18-10 for a 45-35 lead entering the final frame.

Dawson was 6-of-10 at the line in the third with six field goals while holding the Lady Lions to only four field goals and two free throws.

The final period saw the Lady Eagles build a 17-point lead before Taylor's JaQuirrea Jenkins scored nine of her game-high 21 points in the comeback effort while Jawain Gaston hit a pair of 3-pointers to cut the Dawson lead to 55-50.

But Dawson's Kyra Lunford hit five points late in the fourth including 3-of-6 free throws to finish the game with 17 points. Camryn Perry added 13 points for the Lady Eagles.

Dawson will travel to Alief Elsik on Friday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m. and then host Pearland on Friday, January 25 at 7:00 p.m.
