Lady Eagle roundballers advance to 6A Region III third round

The Dawson Lady Eagles won both of their playoff games last week, one in dominating fashion and the other in a hard-fought battle.

The Lady Eagles are seeking to advance to the 6A Region III finals for the second consecutive year where they came up short last season to Summer Creek 58-42. Dawson was 34-5 last year while going 16-0 to win the District 22-6A crown.

Dawson dumped Fort Bend Ridge Point 70-21 in the Region III bi-district contest before slipping past North Shore 49-40 in the regional area round.

Dawson 49 - North Shore 40

The North Shore Lady Mustangs scored the game's first point with a free throw for a 1-0 lead and then the Lady Eagles went on a 9-0 run to build a 13-7 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

Dawson used a late scoring run in the second period for a 28-16 lead at intermission.

North Shore cut the Dawson lead to single digits mid-way in the third period but thanks to the strong play of Journey Lovett and Faith Etienne who scored in double digits, the Lady Eagles led 38-27 heading into the final frame.

That's when things really got crazy as the Lady Mustangs took advantage of several Dawson turnovers and missed opportunities at the free throw line.

With a little less than three minutes left in the game, North Shore tied up the game at 39-39.

Dawson went on a 10-1 run with some clutch free throws to pull out the 49-40 playoff win.

The Lady Eagles led 35-23 in the third quarter, and many thought the game was over but when there are missed shots from the field, poor passing, free throws that miss the mark, and turnovers -- it allows a good team to make a comeback and possibly get the upset over the team that is favored to win.

As Dawson moves closer to the region finals and possibly advancing to the state basketball tournament, the players must eliminate mistakes and give a more concentrated effort if they are going to achieve their dream.

No. 9 state-ranked Dawson (34-3) will face the Jersey Village Lady Falcons (20-16) on Tuesday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Campbell Center.
