FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Lady Mustangs were never really challenged in their area round playoff game against Houston Austin. There never was any question in the outcome of the series as the Lady 'Stangs totally dismantled the Lady Bulldogs 21-0 in a game that only went three innings because of the mercy rule.
Friendswood scored 10 runs in the first frame and nine runs in the second inning for a quick 19-0 lead. The Lady Mustangs also held Austin hitless in the game.
The Lady Mustangs were led on offense by Lauren Massar who had three hits (single, double, and triple, 4 runs scored, and 7 RBI's). Lindsey Davis had two hits (single, double, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI). Rylie Kohls had a double and an RBI. Sabrina Yates had two hits with a single and a double, and two RBI's. Kelsey Eubanks had two hits with a single and a double, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI's. Caitlyn Garivey had three hits including two singles and a double, two runs scored, and 3 RBI's. Missy Jesionowski had a single, scored two runs and had 2 RBI's. Amber Mills, Carrie Flores each scored three runs in the contest. Jackie Dubcak scored two runs.
Others that contributed in the scoring were Aimee Fifield and Tori Homer who each scored a run.
Kelly Smith and Massar combined to throw a no hitter and face only nine batters. Smith pitched one inning striking out all three batters. Massar pitched two innings striking out three to earn the win.
Friendswood 9 - Austin 0
Friendswood swept the best-of-three series with a 9-0 win in the second game.
Kelly Smith allowed just one hit in three innings with eight strikeouts. Lauren Massar finished the game, striking out two in two innings.
Offensively, Lindsey Davis and Missy Jesionowski each drove in two runs, while Ryle Kohls added an RBI. Sabrina Yates and Caitlyn Garivey scored twice each, while Amber Mills, Carrie Flores, Massar and Jesionowski scored once a piece.
All four District 24-4A playoff teams advanced to the regional quarterfinals.
Friendswood’s best-of-three series against Santa Fe begins at 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 14 at the old Pearland Dawson High School (now Pearland Junior High School). Game 2 will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the same location, while Game 3, if necessary, would be immediately afterward.
