FRIENDSWOOD — There were some early questions that were answered for Friendswood head coach Robert Koopmann in the first game of the 2013 football season. While there are still some other questions that will need to be answered as the young season begins, Koopmann can rest a little easier based on the performance by the Mustangs in their 36-14 victory over Alvin.
The biggest question was who will replace record-setting quarterback Jordan Wood to begin the 2013 campaign.
Koopmann has had to face that question over the past 18 years with Friendswood, but not as the head coach. His first year in 2012 was very successful and, despite having to find a new field general, Koopmann was really excited entering his second season.
It seems that junior QB Jake Blumrick has all the tools needed to continue the high expectancy that Friendswood fans have come to know over the past 20-plus years.
The other question was a little easier to answer as the Mustangs returned nine starters on defense and they limited Alvin to a mere 163 yards with 61 yards coming on the ground with only five first downs.
The Yellowjackets got a long touchdown pass covering 56-yards early in the first quarter and another touchdown pass in the third quarter covering their 14 points.
Meanwhile, the Friendswood offense racked up 393 total yards with 18 first downs.
The 'Stangs got on the scoreboard first when Eric Loll hauled in a pass from Blumrick covering 29-yards on their first possession of the game. The extra point missed the mark for a quick 6-0 lead with 9:44 left in the opening period.
It took Alvin only 17 seconds to knot up the game at 7-7 as Payton Blanchette caught a scoring pass from QB Gunner Olszewski covering 56-yards with 9:27 remaining in the first period.
But that is as close as the Yellowjackets would get as Friendswood would go on a 13-0 run in the first half for a 20-7 halftime lead.
With 5:01 left in the first quarter, junior running back Sam Longbotham would score on an 11-yard run. Garron Stewart added the extra point for a 13-7 lead.
The Mustangs closed out the first half with another score as Blumrick launched a bomb that was gathered by Colin Faulk covering 66-yards with 1:19 left before halftime. Stewart hit the PAT for a 20-7 advantage at intermission.
The Jackets scored quickly in the second half as Blanchette and Olszewski hooked up again for a 19-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 20-14 with 10:54 left in the third.
Friendswood wouldn't panic as the Mustangs reeled off 16 unanswered points starting by answering the Alvin score with a 54-yard scoring bomb from QB Brandon Sargent to Slade Holle with 5:20 left in the third quarter making the score 27-14.
With 1:35 left in the third quarter, Stewart nailed a 24-yard field goal giving the Mustangs some more breathing room 30-14.
The final score of the game for Friendswood came with 8:02 remaining in the final period when Colin Faulk caught a 38-yard scoring pass from Blumrick. The PAT missed again leaving the Mustangs with a 36-14 victory.
Blumrick opened up his varsity career hitting 10-of-23 passing for 219 yards and four TDs with one INT.
Longbotham led the ground attack with 108 yards on 13 carries.
Faulk led all receives with three catches for 112 yards and two scores. Holle had two grabs for 63 yards and one TD. Loll had three catches for 43 yards and a score. Longbotham had two catches for 11 yards and one score.
