Last season at this time, Friendswood was 1-5 and needed to win their final four games to finish 5-5 to have a chance to make the playoffs.

Head coach Jordan Johnson saw his football warriors sweep the final four games and advance to the post-season.

The Mustangs are presently 2-4 and need to do the same thing this season to finish 6-4 and claim a playoff spot.

Friendswood is in a district with some very talented teams led by Angleton (6-0) and La Porte (5-1) who are both ranked in the top 10 in the state.

Both teams advanced to the 5A Div I Region III finals last season in a head-to-head clash won by Angleton who advanced to the 5A Div I state semifinals where they lost to state finalist Smithson-Valley 21-14.

The two teams have yet to play each other this season in district.

Angleton QB Bryce Duron threw two touchdown passes to Kaleb Jammer, and Jammer ran for another as No. 4 Angleton posted the 41-6 District 11-5A, Division I win.

Jammer, the son of former NFL great Quentin Jammer, scored the Wildcats’ first three touchdowns after Friendswood had taken a 6-0 lead.

The senior receiver, whose uncle is Tennessee Titans free safety Quandre Diggs, had five catches for 105 yards to go along with three carries for 28 yards. He also returned a punt 40 yards to set up his team’s fourth score.

Angleton (6-0 overall, 3-0 district) rolled up 441 total yards, including 306 rushing on 38 carries. Jayden Moore (8-80, 1 TD) and Wyatt Neyland (7-50, 1 TD) led 12 different ball carriers for the Wildcats.

Duron completed 8 of 14 passes for 135 yards — all after his first five attempts fell incomplete.

Friendswood (2-4, 0-3) had 176 total yards — 113 rushing on 37 carries. Tripp Bateman led the Mustangs with 69 yards on 22 carries, while Josh Brister completed 8 of 15 passes for 63 yards with one interception. Jaxon Black had four catches for 57 yards to lead the Mustangs.

“I think for us, defensively, it’s just a matter of getting our fits right, all being on the same page,” Friendswood head coach Jordan Johnson said. “That goes for both sides of the ball. We had problems in protection tonight. The line of scrimmage in general was the common theme tonight that we struggled with, and it was a big difference in the game.”

Angleton, backed up to its own 8 after a 14-yard sack, went three-and-out on its first possession, and Friendswood took over at the Wildcats 27-yard line after a 19-yard punt by Duron.

The Mustangs took advantage of the field position. Bateman capped an eight-play drive with a 3-yard TD run. Angleton blocked the PAT, but Friendswood led 6-0 with 7:20 left in the first quarter which would be the only score for the Mustangs.

Friendswood hosts Pasadena (1-5, 0-3) on Friday. Porter dealt the Eagles their fifth consecutive loss, 42-7, on Thursday.

“As far as confidence in Friendswood, that’s not a problem for us,” Johnson said. “Right now, what we need to figure out is executing for four quarters and playing complimentary football.

"We’ve flashed every single game this season. We’ve had great drives, great quarters and great stretches of games. It’s a matter of doing that consistently, and that will be our focus going forward.”
