Clear Creek sweeps Manvel out of playoffs
May 13, 2014
MANVEL — The Manvel Mavericks ran into a good Clear Creek squad and were swept out of the playoffs in the best-of-three series.
The first game put Manvel in a hole as the Wildcats blasted the Mavs 12-2 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
It appeared that the first game might be close based on the first inning as Clear Creek scored a run in the top of the first, but Manvel answered in the bottom half of the first with two runs making the score 2-1.
Troy Kettler opened up the bottom of the first with a walk but was picked off first for the first out. Levi Dixon walked, Brian Ingamells was safe at first on an error by the third baseman to putting runners as first and second.
Miguel Garcia singled up the middle to score Dixon and Ingamells for a 2-1 lead.
But that would be all the runs scored by the Mavs as Creek would go on a 11-0 run the rest of the way.
Creek scored four runs in the top of the third and three runs in the top of the fourth to increase the lead to 8-2.
Timely hitting and seven Manvel errors allowed the Wildcats to blow the game wide open.
The three runs Creek scored in the fourth was without a hit.
The Wildcats added a run in the sixth on an RBI single and a run in the seventh on a throwing error by the Manvel shortstop.
"We had big hits in some key situations and also were able to capitalize on their mistakes," Clear Creek head coach Brent Kunefke said. "All in all, it was a good game for the Wildcats."
Clear Creek 9 - Manvel 8
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Clear Creek's Landon Etzel delivered a game-winning single that brought home left fielder Austin Adams home from second base to give the Wildcats a walk-off 9-8 win and a sweep of the Manvel Mavericks.
The Mavs were a totally different team in the second game of their best-of-three series with Clear Creek after getting pounded 12-2 in the first contest.
This time, the Mavs did a little pounding themselves as they scattered 16 hits over nine innings for eight runs.
Leading 8-6 in the top of the eighth, it appeared that Manvel had a shot at winning the game and sending the series to a third and final game.
But Clear Creek got a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to tie up the contest 8-8.
It would be miscues and inconsistent pitching that would lead the Mavs to their demise.
Manvel suffered three errors and gave away 10 free bases that included five walks and five hit batters which is a cardinal sin on both counts.
The strong hitting by the Mavs proved to come up short in the end.
Manvel was led by Tomas Garcia who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Seth Roush was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Levi Dixon was 1-for-4 with one run scored. Shane Jackson was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Kyle Rogers was 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI including a double. Austin Alexis was 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Joey Pate was 2-for-5. Casey Vincent was 1-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI from a home run.
