Great Scott! Manvel rallies to defeat North Shore
September 5, 2016
MANVEL — In 2015, Manvel advanced to the 6A Region III Div. II finals before falling to eventual state champion Katy for the third consecutive year while the North Shore Mustangs captured the 6A Div. I state championship.
However, Manvel pulled out a thrilling 43-40 victory last year to hand North Shore one of their three losses despite winning the state title.
With Manvel dropping down to Class 5A in 2016 as a result of losing students to the new Shadow Creek High School, head coach Kirk Martin still stayed with playing some of the top teams in the area with a very challenging non-district schedule.
So far so good as the Mavericks have won their first two games. They beat No. 2 5A area-ranked Crosby 35-21 and No. 4 6A area-ranked North Shore 26-13. Now the Mavericks will close out their non-district schedule with No. 2 area-ranked Pearland on Friday, September 9 at The Rig at 7:00 p.m.
Manvel held a slim 6-3 lead at halftime against the Mustangs after they scored in the first quarter on a sensational 53-yard scoring pass from QB Kason Martin to WR Keylon Stokes. The PAT was blocked leaving the Mavs with a 6-0 advantage.
North Shore drove deep into Manvel territory twice only to see the Mavs defense come up with a key interception on their first drive and later Manvel recovered a North Shore fumble to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard.
With 7:04 left in the second quarter, the Mustangs finally scored on a 32-yard field goal by Jonathan Rodriguez when their drive stalled at the Manvel 15-yard line.
Manvel scored in the third quarter on a 1-yard plunge by Caleb Jolivette. The two-point conversion failed leaving the score 12-3 with 5:49 left in the third.
North Shore took the ensuing kickoff down the field with their best offensive showing of the game.
Using a sweep option left and right, the Mustangs were able get some strong runs before they capped off the drive on a 4-yard run by Katreyvion Smith. The PAT was good and North Shore trailed 12-10.
North Shore got another 32-yard field goal from Rodriguez with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter to take their first lead of the game 13-12 and it appeared that the momentum had shifted in favor of the 'Stangs.
After Manvel was able to move the ball, North Shore got the ball back looking to take time off the clock.
But the defense of the Mavs forced North Shore to punt the ball to them with less than three minutes to go in the game.
That's when Cam Scott stepped up in a heroes roll as he gathered in a short pass for what appeared to be just a couple of yards. But his tenacity and determination picked up another 10 yards to the Manvel 40 with less than two minutes left to go in the slugfest.
That's when Martin dropped back and made the North Shore defense pay for their stacked defense close to the line of scrimmage.
Martin lofted the ball down the left sideline as two North Shore defenders ran into each other while Scott gathered in the perfectly thrown pass and then used his long stride to outrace the Mustang defenders to the end zone with the game's winning score.
Luis Moreno booted the PAT and Manvel regained the lead 19-13 with only 1:34 left in the contest.
North Shore couldn't move the ball following the kickoff and Manvel got the ball with 59 seconds left.
A hand off to RB Sam Smith resulted in an unforeseen score as Smith ran over and around the deflated North Shore defense for a 29-yard score. The PAT was good and the final was posted 26-13.
Manvel finished with 325 yards of total offense compared to North Shore who had 341 total yards.
Scott was the offensive star for Manvel with four clutch receptions for 129 yards and one TD. Keylon Stokes was another standout on offense with three catches for 96 yards and one score.
Martin was 11-of-28 passing for 255 yards and a pair of TDs.
Jolivette had six carries for 51 yards rushing and a TD and Smith had six totes for 42 yards and a score.
No. 1 5A Manvel will travel to face the No. 2 6A Pearland Oilers on Friday, September 9 at 7:00 p.m. at The Rig.
