Manvel cruises past Dobie 34-17

MANVEL — No. 1 area-ranked Manvel Mavericks continued to remain unbeaten as they opened up District 22-6A competition with a 35-17 win over the Pasadena Dobie Longhorns.

Dobie actually challenged the Mavericks in the opening period by getting out to a 10-7 lead.

The Longhorns scored first on a 5-yard pass from Joe Gonzalez to Rashaad Randall with 7:26 left in the first quarter. Alexis Saldivor hit the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

The lead lasted 19 seconds as Qyalan Clay scored on a 3-yard run at the 7:07 mark to knot up the game 7-7.

With only :20 seconds left in the first period, Saldivor booted a 36-yard field goal giving the Horns a 10-7 advantage.

That would be as close as Manvel would allow as the Mavericks have way to much talent and depth.

Manvel scored three times in the second quarter as quarterback D'erq King hit Gary Haynes on a 14-yard scoring strike. King scored on a 6-yard run and they hit Sean Dykes on a 42-yard scoring pass for a 28-0 halftime lead.

The Mavs scored only once in the third quarter as King hit D'Vaughn Pennamon on a 3-yard scoring toss to make the score 35-10.

Dobie managed to score against the Manvel reserves as Randall scored on a 5-yard run with 4:41 left in the game making the final 35-17.

The Longhorns played very hard and should be the team to make the playoffs from Pasadena ISD.

Manvel had 348 total yards compared to 322 total yards for Dobie.

King was 10-of-16 for 206 yards and three TDs while picking up 45 yards on the ground on five carries and another score.

Nine different receivers caught passes for the Mavericks while six different players carried the ball.

Manvel will travel to Pasadena Veterans Stadium on Friday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. to face the Pasadena Eagles.
