Manvel routs South Houston 75-14

MANVEL — The game was over almost before it started. When the first quarter ended with Manvel ahead 41-0, teams that came to scout South Houston and Manvel left out of the press box to go home. They had seen enough.

The Mavericks took advantage of the speed of their wide receivers to literally issue a bombs away mentality as the defenseless South Houston secondary was no match for Manvel's passing game.

The Manvel offense simply sent the receivers down the field and the quarterbacks just loaded up their passing arms and let the ball fly down the field into the arms of the receivers who were behind the defensive secondary.

With less than a minute gone in the game, QB D'Eriq King heaved a bomb to WR Hunter Hagdorn for a 54-yard touchdown. Randy Bermea booted the PAT for a quick 7-0 lead at the 11:15 mark of the first quarter.

Another long pass set up a short 8-yard pass from King to Sean Dykes to make the score 14-0.

After a 3-and-out by the Trojans, Manvel struck again on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Trask to Arik Bennett and a 21-0 advantage.

Manvel's next possession was a 48-yard bomb from King to Dykes with 4:42 remaining in the opening quarter for a 28-0 lead.

South Houston fumbled and Manvel hit paydirt again 12 seconds later as D'Vaughn Pennamon scored on a 12-yard run and a 35-0 lead.

Sam Smith closed out the first quarter scoring marathon with a 4-yard run with 2:15 left in the quarter for the 41-0 lead. The two-point conversion was no good.

Manvel score two more times in the second quarter as Brandon McCarty scored on a 3-yard run and Pennamon got his second score of the game on a 12-yard run making the score 55-0 at intermission.

Manvel score once in the third on a 9-yard run by McCarty to make the score 62-0 after Enis Sefa hit the PAT.

South Houston gave their fans an exciting moment when Samuel Rodriquez took the ensuing kickoff 85-yards for a sensational touchdown to make the score 62-7.

Manvel would score two more times to build a 75-7 lead when Joseph Baldwin scored on a 15-yard fumble recovery and Arthur Givens added a 3-yard scoring run.

With the game clearly under control, the Manvel coaching staff allowed a touching moment as South Houston's Jose Ibarra was allowed to catch a pass and turn it into a 48-yard catch and run touchdown.

Ibarra, who is autistic, is a dedicated member of the South Houston team and he rambled down the field to the cheers of both teams to make the score 75-14.

Manvel improves to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in district. The Mavericks will host the Dawson Eagles (4-2, 3-1) on Friday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Alvin Memorial Stadium. The Eagles lost a heartbreaker to the Pearland Oilers 28-27 last week in overtime after the kicker missed the PAT.
