GALVESTON — Manvel made the long trip to The Rock to face the Ball High Tornadoes and returned home with a lopsided 55-0 district win that could probably have been 100-0 according one of the football officials who oversaw the beating.
The Manvel defense held the Tornadoes to only 105 total yards including only 4-of-7 passing for 17 yards. The Tors have been outscored 244-57 in five 24-4A games.
On the other hand, if one looked only at the stats for the game, it would appear to have been a very close game since Manvel had a season low 200 total yards, mostly because of short drives that set up strong field position after Ball High turnovers.
The Tors had seven fumbles and lost three to the Mavs.
Manvel scored on their first possession of the game as Corey Seymour scored on a 5-yard run with 10:28 left in the opening period.
It took only 2:01 to score again as Carlos Thompson caught a 34-yard scoring toss from Julian Walker to make the score 14-0.
Manvel added another score with 5:24 left in the first quarter as Selwyn Green scored on a 9-yard run and then added another 7-yard scoring run less than three minutes to increase the lead to 28-0.
With :16 left in the first quarter, Ashton Bennett haulted in a 33-yard scoring pass from Walker to increase the lead to 35-0 in the first 12 minutes of action.
Head coach Kirk Martin knew his troops had everything under control as the Mavericks protected their lead in the next three quarters.
Manvel scored one more time in the first half as Green scored his third touchdown of the game on a 6-yard scamper with 6:17 left before intermission. The PAT missed the mark leaving the Mavs with a 41-0 advantage at halftime.
Cliff Niles scored both second half touchdowns on a 10-yard run and a 23-yard pass reception from Oscar Guzman at the 7:45 mark of the fourth period making the final score 55-0. Guzman is the placekicker for the Mavs and he hit 7-of-8 extra points.
The biggest game of the season will take place on Friday, November 4 at The Rig in Pearland when Dawson and Manvel meet in the season finale. Both teams were hoping they would be undefeated entering the District 24-4A contest, but Dawson lost to La Marque 35-28 last week.
Nonetheless, the undefeated Mavericks (9-0, 5-0) can win the outright district championship with a victory. A loss to the Eagles would give La Marque, Manvel, and Dawson a three-way share of the league crown.
