PEARLAND — Pearland head coach Donna Vacek knew that it would take a miracle for her young girls to knock off North Shore who one of the top 5A teams in the Houston area. With only one senior on the squad - Vacek believed that her girls had already accomplished a lot this season as the Lady Oilers entered the first round of the 5A Region III bi-district playoff contest.
It didn't take long for North Shore to flex their aggressive muscles as the Lady Mustangs opened up the first two minutes of the first quarter with a 9-0 run.
After Pearland finally got their first basket to make the score 9-2, North Shore would go on another scoring surge to make the score 22-2 before the Lady Oilers were able to find the basket again.
The first quarter ended with North Shore leading 28-7. The Lady Mustangs would continue to dominate the second period 18-6 to take a 46-13 lead into the dressing room at intermission.
Pearland could manage only three points in the third quarter while North Shore racked up 20 more points for a 66-16 lead entering the final eight minutes of the season for Pearland.
The Lady Oilers outscored the Lady Mustangs 11-10 in the final frame showing Vacek and the Pearland fans that Pearland may be young and inexperienced, but there was no quit in their hearts.
North Shore had four players finish in double figures while Pearland junior Ebony Ford led the Lady O's with seven points.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game," Vacek said. "I am proud of the girls for the way they battled the entire season and I believe we have a strong foundation on which to rebuild our girls basketball program at Pearland."
Lauren Villarreal is the only senior for the Lady Oilers while the majority of the team consisted of juniors and sophomores.
