PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers basketball team started out in a positive way and looked to make the playoffs this season. Unfortunately, the team hit a wall in the latter part of the year and failed to advance to the post-season.
"We found out what happens when we lose focus and quit playing as a team," head coach Donna Vacek said at the end of the season.
Despite the disappointing ending, the Lady Oilers did have three players who were named to the District 24-5A All-District teams.
Pearland didn't have a player named to the first-team, but senior Ebony Ford and junior Johnasha Manning were named to the second-team.
Ford has been a three-year starter for Vacek as she closed out her final year averaging 11 points per game, 5.8 rebouds and two assists. Ford had three double/doubles with a high-point game of 18 points.
Manning averaged 5.7 ppg, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. She had six double/doubles with a high-point game of 18.
Junior Kiara Freeman was named to the 24-5A honorable mention team after averaging 5.0 ppg, 3.2 assists with a high-point game of 19.
Manning and Freeman should be two of the stronger players returning for Vacek next season.
Jordan Hockstedler, Christy Ross, Ford, Marissa LeJune, and Freeman were named to the All-Academic team for their strong showing in the classroom.
