Pearland diamondmen fall to Atascocita in 6A Region III Div I finals
May 30, 2025
The Oilers won the first game in dramatic fashion 6-5 to lead the series 1-0 and it appeared that Pearland head coach David Rogers was going to see his diamondmen win their third straight 6A Region III title to make another trip to Round Rock to compete for a state baseball championship.
In the first game, Pearland overcame some errors and mental mistakes to take a 6-5 come-from-behind win.
Trailing 5-4, senior Logan Johnson opened the fifth frame with a walk. Pinch runner Pickett took his place on the first base bag to run for Johnson.
After Pickett drew five consecutive pickoff attempts by Atascocita starting pitcher Jaxon McKnight, the next pitch that was directed to Hurst who lifted the ball over the left field wall at the Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park on the UH campus for a two-run homer to give Pearland a 6-5 lead and eventually the win.
All-State shortstop/pitcher Nico Partida had a great game going 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple that led to a score and a two-run single. He also struck out the final batter for Atascocita to get the save.
Junior pitcher Grant Shepherd got the win after going five innings and allowing seven hits, five runs, striking out four and walking three. All the runs were unearned.
Game 2 - Atascocita 4 Pearland 1
Game 3 - Atascocita 2 Pearland 1
Unfortunately for Pearland, the bats went silent in the final two games of the series that allowed Atascocita to beat the Oilers 4-1 and 2-1 to advance to the 6A state baseball tournament.
In Game 2, Pearland was held without a hit until the fifth inning and finished the game with three hits while scoring a run in the seventh inning.
In Game 3, the Oilers were held without a hit until the seventh inning when they got a run on two hits for the contest.
Pearland closed out the 2025 baseball season with a 28-9 record while getting playoff wins over Fort Bend Travis (4-0, 9-0), Summer Creek (7-0, 5-0), and Lamar (7-0, 3-1).
