Pearland East advances to Texas East state finals

PEARLAND — The Pearland East All-Stars 12-year-olds won the Section 3 championship with a sensational come-from-behind 14-10 victory over a shocked Bellaire team. The victory sent the Pearlanders to the Texas East state finals in Tyler.

In the game against Bellaire, Pearland jumped out to a 4-0 lead and it looked like the boys of summer would run Bellaire off the baseball diamond.

However, the momentum of the game shifted in favor of Bellaire who rallied for a 10-6 advantage in the top of the sixth and Pearland was just a pitch away from suffering a rare defeat.

That's when Damian Angel blasted a grand-slam home run that tied up the game as Josh Flory, Ethan O'Donley, and Jake Sock led Angel to the pay station.

But the Pearlanders weren't finished as they added four more runs in the frame as the home run derby began as Brayden Evans and Cameron Ponce followed with solo homers. Hayden Windsor, who started the sixth inning rally with a double walked his time at the plate. Drew Stanaland laced a single and Flory singled home the eighth run of the inning to make the score 14-10.

Pearland scored eight runs on seven hits, two walks, and three home runs. Seven of the runs scored after there was two outs on the scoreboard.

The four runs by Pearland in the first inning came when Chris Cano smashed a two-run homer. Evans, Windsor, Stanaland, and Mark Zapata all got base hits to add two more runs and the early 4-0 lead.

Windsor was the starting pitcher, but he got roughed up in the second inning as Bellaire scored six runs on four hits to take a 6-4 lead including a grand-slam home run. Bellaire added four more runs in the fourth frame. STATE TOURNAMENT

Pearland opened up the first round of the state tournament with a 24-9 thrashing over Washington City. Pearland took care of Bridge City 10-0 in the second round to advance to the state finals. They played the winner of Bridge City or Lamar on Tuesday (late) for the state title.
