PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers are on a roll early this season and head coach John Turner likes what he sees.
On Friday night, Pearland hosted No. 1 area-ranked Friendswood (No. 10 state-ranked) and the two teams battled for over three hours before the Lady Mustangs finally pulled out the win in the fifth game to hand the Lady O's their first loss of the season.
Dropping the first two games, the never-give-up Lady Oilers took the next two games to force the fifth and final tie-breaker. It could have gone either way as both teams battled to the end.
Turner saw his girls get up early on Saturday and return to the Katy Tournament where they swept four teams in route to the Katy Volleyball Tournament crown.
The Lady Oilers beat Mayde Creek 25-15, 25-15 as Ashley Vann and Waverly Sadler led the way with seven kills each. Haley Morton had 16 assists while Beth Schecterle added 18 digs.
Seven Lakes was the next victim for Pearland 25-16, 25-18 as Sadler had 10 kills while Cassidy Nussman had four blocks with Nicole Poling leading the way with 13 assists and Schecterle had 16 digs.
In the third game, Pearland knocked off Bellaire 25-13, 25-21 as Autumn Taylor stepped up with seven kills, Vann had four blocks, Haley Morton had 14 assists and Shecterle had 15 digs with Katarina Morton adding 13.
Pearland faced Richmond Foster (2011 4A state semifinalist) in the finals and earned a hard-fought 25-21, 24-26, 25-23 victory to bring home the championship.
Turner saw his girls step up when needed as Vann, Sadler, and Taylor led the way with 12 kills each. Nussman had five blocks while Vann had four. Haley Morton had 24 assists with Nicole Poling adding 15. Schecterle had 15 digs while Katarina Morton had 13.
The Lady Oilers improve to 10-1 on the season. The Lady Oilers were led by the all-around play of Waverly Sadler with 59 kills during the tournament. Pearland was also led defensively by Beth Shecterle with 126 digs.
“I was so pleased with the consistent play of all my players and the way they fought to win as a team," Turner said. "This is a very special group of players that believe in each other and my system that I have in place.
“I think the big thing that most impressed me was how they came back after losing a five-set match to Friendswood and did not miss a beat by reeling off four wins. That says a lot about the character of this team.”
