PASADENA — The pre-season rankings didn't put the three-time 5A Region III champions in the top 20, but the most recent poll has the Lady Oilers ranked No. 4 in the state. And they are a very young team.
This past week, Pearland added seven more teams as their victims at the Pasadena Memorial and High School Sports Live softball tournaments. While all the wins were important, the biggest win was against defending 5A state champion The Woodlands.
Pearland opened up the week with a 6-2 win over Pasadena Memorial as senior Haley Beam got the win in the pitching circle and freshman Samantha Show picked up the save. Beam was 2-for-4 at the plate and sophomore Kristen Cuyos was 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored.
The Lady Oilers knocked off Fort Bend Clements 7-6 as Beam got the win. Cuyos continued her torrid hitting going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Beam helped her own cause with a three-run homer while going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Kennedale was next as Pearland got a close 2-1 win. Show went the distance to earn the win while Cuyos and Devon Foose scored the runs on RBIs by Alena Moreno and Madeline Myers.
Pearland beat Clear Falls 4-2 as Show picked up the win. Kaitlin Owens knocked in two runs and Beam had an RBI.
The Lady Oilers faced former district rival and state-power Dobie and came away with a 1-0 victory that went nine innings. Beam went the distance in the pitching circle allowing only two hits. Krissa Powell got the game-winning RBI with the bases loaded in the ninth frame.
Pearland faced defending Class 5A state champion The Woodlands who defeated the Lady O's last year in the state semifinals. This time, it was Pearland who took control for a solid 6-1 win as Show pitched a complete game allowing only one infield hit. Show also blasted a 3-run home run while Cuyos went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
The Lady Oilers took care of business against Santa Fe 4-1 as Beam got the win with a complete game. The only run for Santa Fe was unearned. Show, Moreno, Pilkington, and Foose all scored runs while Pilkington, Powell, Moreno, and Cuyos registered RBIs.
