Goins named MVP; Scalise is Coach of the Year

PEARLAND — The Pearland Oilers had an outstanding 2013 season finishing 34-6 while advancing to the Class 5A Region III semifinals before being ousted by Jersey Village in a best-of-three series. The Oilers shared the 22-5A championship with the Alvin Yellowjackets.
Pearland head coach Anthony Scalise was named Coach of the Year by his coaching peers.
The Oilers had six players named to the All-District first-team and one player named to the second-team.
Leading the way was senior pitcher Blake Goins who was named as the league's Most Valuable Player. Goins finished the season with a 14-2 overall pitching record. Goins was also named third-team All-State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Other Pearland players who were named to the first-team included: sophomore outfielder Ryan Diaz, junior second baseman Skylar Valentine, junior shortstop Connor Wong, junior catcher Nathan Carter, junior third baseman Jacob Barfield, junior designated hitter Jake Crain, and senior pitcher Andre Shewcraft.
Junior outfielder Hayden Cole was named to the second-team.
While the Oilers are losing two top pitchers, Scalise has a strong foundation to build on for the 2014 baseball season.
Other first-team selections included pitchers Russell Ivy and Tristen Deriso of Alvin, Travarus Ansley of Pasadena Dobie and Shane McCarley of Manvel; first baseman Trey
Silvers of Manvel; shortstop Zach Silvers of Manvel; outfielders Tim Burr and Travis White of Alvin, Ivan Smith of Manvel and Alberto Castillo of South Houston; and utility player Fernando Rodriguez of Pasadena.Other second-team selections included pitchers Mitchell Head of Pasadena Memorial, Robert Loza of Sam Rayburn and Dalton Bennett of Manvel; catcher Chris Jaime of
Pasadena Rayburn; first basemen Ruben Guevara of Pasadena Dobie and Joseph Riley of Alvin; second baseman Gerrick Jimenez of Alvin; shortstop Josh Estrada of Pasadena Rayburn; third baseman Stephen Mata of Alvin; outfielders Jason Campbell of Alvin and Adam Lopez of Pasadena Memorial; and designated hitter Gavin Alvarez of Alvin.Newcomer of the year was Levi Dixon of Manvel.
