Pearland Lacrosse League awards first-ever scholarship

PEARLAND — The Pearland Youth Lacrosse League (PYLAX) recently awarded a $1,500 college scholarship to Dawson High School graduate and senior lacrosse player, Jeaux Chauvin.

“Pearland Lacrosse is thrilled to be able to award the first ever Tim O’Brien Lacrosse Scholarship. We plan to make this a standing tradition for years to come” PYLAX Board President Ron Dunklee said.

Chauvin, who played defense on the varsity Pearland Rail Cats lacrosse team, plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULF).

“Lacrosse has shaped every aspect of my of life,” Chauvin said. “From my coaches to the players of the game, my entire high school life was molded by it. My work ethic, time management and leadership skills were all shaped by my time on the lacrosse team.”

Chauvin, who will play lacrosse for ULF, played with the Pearland Rail Cats for four years. During that time, Pearland’s Cinderella lacrosse team went from losing almost every game in their first season to winning their way to the district playoffs last spring.

“Jeaux joined our squad as a freshman and has been instrumental in turning our club around. Not only is he a great player, he has contributed to the growth of Lacrosse on many levels, coaching our Junior High Team and officiating in the men’s league,” Rail Cats coach Tim O’Brien said. “He is a great example of how these dedicated student-athletes impact our community.”

Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in Texas and is growing nationally as well.

“As a sport, lacrosse’s explosive growth is providing opportunities to participate in all age groups and boys/girls as well as opportunities to play at collegiate level,” Dunklee said. “This scholarship would not have been possible without the pronominal support of parents and volunteers which make the entire program possible.

"Going forward as a league, we plan to make awarding scholarships to our high school players a tradition and will continue to grow the scholarship program each year as the league continues to grow. “

A scholarship presentation ceremony was held Thursday (Aug. 13) at Turner High School.
