Pearland shuts out Pasadena 63-0

PEARLAND — When Pearland was sent back to District 22-5A after the realignment by the University Interscholastic League (UIL), head coach Tony Heath knew there would be games like this.
One of the things that helped the Oilers win the 2010 Class 5A Division I state championship was the strong competition they faced in District 24-5A.
Unfortunately, the Oilers won't have a consistent test each week which will mean the players will have to have additional discipline in getting better each week.
It took Pearland only :54 seconds to score as sophomore running back JaColbie Butler crossed the goal line on a 2-yard run with 11:02 left in the opening period. The big play was a 54-yard run by Adam Saunders to the Pasadena two-yard line to set up the score by Butler for a quick 7-0 lead.
Pasadena began their first possession of the game on their own 16 and fumbled on the first play which was picked up by Pearland and returned to the Eagles 6.
Butler punched it in from 2-yards out with 8:59 left in the quarter for his second score. Michael Winstead booted his second extra point for a 14-0 advantage.
The next possession for the Eagles was three plays out punt giving the Oilers good field position at the Pasadena 41. Hayden Cole ripped off a 28-yard run to the Pasadena 13. Three plays later Cole scores on a 1-yard plunge making the score 21-0.
It took only 1:34 for the Oilers to score again as Butler broke a 52-yard scoring jaunt for his third touchdown of the game and a 28-0 lead with 4:11 still remaining in the opening period.
Saunders would cap the first half scoring with a 27-yard run with 4:20 left in the second period giving the Oilers a 35-0 lead at intermission.
Coach Heath tries to be respectful to his opponents and pulled the starters for most of the second half.
Jonathan Goff scored on a 35-yard interception. Cole added a second score on a 21-yard burst. Marcus McDaniel crossed the pay station wth a 12-yard scoring run and backup quarterback Kalen Johnson got loose on a 58-yard scoring dash to post the 63-0 final score with 8:00 showing on the game clock.
The next time the Oilers got deep in the Pasadena territory, Heath ordered the offense to take a knee to run out the clock.
The Oilers racked up 528 total yards and 18 first downs while the Pearland defense limited the Eagles to only 56 total yards with six yards rushing and 50 yards passing.
QB Jacob Garner was 6-of-15 passing for 74 yards while Johnson was 5-of-7 for 33 yards.
Saunders led all ball carriers with four carries for 84 yards and one score. Garner had three carries for 22 yards. Zach Boegler had three carries for six yards. Cole had eight totes for 66 yards and two scores. Butler finished with 10 carries for 73 yards and three TDs. Johnson had three carries for 67 yards and one score. Cameron Brown had seven runs for 80 yards and McDaniel had five carries for 23 yards.
Kevin Washington caught four passes for 43 yards and Butler had one catch for 26 yards. Jake Crain snagged one pass for nine yards and Andrew Mapps grabbed one pass for six yards.
The Oilers (3-1, 1-0) will travel to face Pasadena Sam Rayburn (2-2, 0-1) on Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Pasadena Veterans Stadium. Rayburn lost to Alvin 63-7 in the district opener for both teams.
