PASADENA — The Pearland Oilers have never lost to Deer Park since Tony Heath arrived as the head coach in 1997. The two teams have had some hard-hitting games, but the Oilers have always come out on top.
In 2000 - Pearland faced the Deer in the Astrodome and came away with a 35-13 win. It was the first playoff win for the Oilers in 50 years.
In 2001 - Pearland eliminated the Deer in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
In 2002 and 2003 - with both teams in the same district - Deer Park had to beat Pearland in order to advance to the post-season while the Oilers were already secure with their playoff spot. Deer Park lost both games 14-10 and 35-34.
Neither team faced one another until last year when the Oilers were sent back to District 22-5A. However - this game was different as Pearland and Deer Park entered the game undefeated with the district title on the line. While the Deer advanced to the playoffs -- Pearland claimed the league crown with a 20-9 win.
Deer Park (6-3, 4-2) hosted the Oilers with both teams relatively assured of a playoff spot. But neither team was going to give in to the other. Despite the hard-fought effort - the results were the same as in the past as the Oilers weren't really threatened this year in their 27-7 win to improve to 7-2 on the season and 6-1 in district.
With one game remaining in the regular season - Pearland will be pulling for the Deer in the season finale against Pasadena Memorial (7-0). A win by the Deer will give the Oilers a share of the District 22-5A title.
Pearland scored first against the Deer as Eric Dixon intercepted a pass and raced 45 yards for the first score of the game. Dylan Nowak hit the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 39 seconds left in the opening period.
It took Deer Park only 15 seconds to tie up the game as Chandler Meyers returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to tie up the game 7-7 with 24 seconds left in the first quarter.
But that would be as close as the Deer would get as the Oilers scored 20 unanswered points with 13 coming in the second period for a 20-7 halftime lead.
With the Oilers facing third and one on the Deer 33 - Pearland reached into their bag of tricks and scored on a halfback pass that caught the Deer secondary asleep.
Quarterback Trey Anderson tossed the ball to running back Dustin Garrison who launched a pass to a wide-open Myles Kanipes who had slipped behind the defense.
The pass was a little slow in being launche which gave a Deer Park defensive back a chance to stop Kanipes, but the fiesty wide receiver wasn't going to be denied as he put a shake-and-bake move at the five yard line and then crossed the end zone for the score.
Kanipes was on the receiving end of another pass from Anderson covering 14 yards to make the score 20-7 with 4:19 left before intermission.
Garrison scored on a 1-yard run late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Anderson hit his first eight passes and finished the game with 14-for-17 passing for 106 yards and one TD.
Garrison continued the consistent production by a Pearland running back as he crossed the 1,000 yard barrier with 1,107 yards.
For the past 12 straight years - Pearland, known as Running Back U, has had a ball carrier cross over the 1,000 yard mark. Garrison joins an elite corps of running backs by the name of Anthony Evans, Brandon Roberson, Jeremy Brown, Fozzy Whittaker, Sam Proctor (QB), and Kacey Carrier.
Anderson is also in elite company with over 1,000 yards passing at 1,300 yards.
Kanipes had six catches for 63 yards for two touchdowns. Garrison had 23 carries for 142 yards and one score.
Pearland will host Dobie at The Rig on Friday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the season finale.
