PEARLAND — When the Pearland Oilers entered the season finale against Alvin - they needed to beat the Yellowjackets to finish with a perfect 10-0 mark and to take sole possession of the District 24-5A crown.
When the final seconds ticked off the game clock - the Oilers (10-0) had accomplished both in dominate fashion with a 62-23 thrashing of Alvin (1-9, 0-7).
If you liked to watch a game filled with long runs, then the fans got their monies worth.
The opening play of the game for Pearland was an indication of what was to come as senior running back Dustin Garrison raced 69-yards for a touchdown to give the Oilers a quick 7-0 lead.
Alvin answered on their next possession to tie up the game and then Pearland got the ball back and John Gibberman found a huge hole in the middle of the Alvin defense and scooted 61-yards for another long-range score and a 14-7 lead.
The Jackets added a 47-yard field goal on their next possession to cut the lead to 14-10 with 3:16 left in the first quarter and that would be as close as Alvin would get the rest of the night.
It took only 1:13 for Pearland to add their next cross-country touchdown as Garrison had a 59-yard scoring jaunt for a 21-10 lead. But the Oilers were finished as Pearland recovered an Alvin fumble and quarterback Trey Anderson tossed a 6-yard scoring pass to Myles Kanipes giving the Oilers a 28-10 first quarter lead.
After Alvin was forced to punt, sophomore Kevin Washington got in on the scoring act as he dodged a couple a would-be tacklers, bounced off a hard defensive hit, gathered his balanced and reversed his field on his way to a thrilling 83-yard touchdown and a 35-10 lead with 9:10 left in the second period.
With 6:12 left before intermission, Garrison added another sensational scoring run covering 32-yards. Kanipes would gather in another Anderson pass for a 24-yard touchdown to wrap up the first half scoring at 48-10.
Garrison finished the first half with eight carries for 213 yards and three touchdowns. Garrison became the first Pearland running back to surpass 2,000 yards in a regular 10-game schedule. He enters the playoffs with 2,008 yards and 33 touchdowns. He is two scores short of tying Kasey Carrier's single-season record of 35.
Pearland head coach Tony Heath benched the starters to avoid any needless injuries as the Oilers prepare to meet the Fort Bend Kempner Cougars - a team they beat 41-27 earlier in the non-district schedule.
The Oilers added two more scores in the second half as Jackie Robinson scored on a 16-yard run and Eric Cooper lit up the fans at The Rig with a 90-yard kickoff return. Dylan Nowak added his eighth extra point of the night.
Anderson finished the game hitting 9-of-12 passing for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Kanipes had four catches for 50 yards and two scores. Tyler Osburn had one catch for 19 yards. Seth Ordeneaux had one grab for 45 yards. Cody Sandman had a catch for eight yards. Garrison had three grabs for 28 yards.
Robinson had 12 carries for 69 yards and a TD.
Pearland will meet Kempner at Alvin Memorial Stadium on Friday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m.
