PEARLAND — For the 13th straight year, the Pearland Oilers will advance to the state playoffs after wrapping up the regular season with a lopsided 42-0 spanking of the Pasadena Dobie Longhorns. The Oilers are now 8-2 overall and 6-1 in district while the Longhorns were eliminated from the playoffs with a 5-5 mark and 4-3 in league play.
Over the past 13 seasons, the Oilers have been to the Class 5A state-semifinals three times (2001,2006,2010) while winning the 5A Division I state championship in 2010 with a 28-24 win over No. 1 nationally-ranked Euless Trinity at Cowboys Stadium.
Last year's squad advanced to the 5A Div. I state quarterfinals before falling to eventual state finalist Hightower, who failed to make the post-season this year.
It is going to be interesting to see how far the Oilers can advance in the playoffs in 2012 as Pearland (8-2) will face old nemesis Deer Park (5-5) on Friday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown. But don't let the record fool anyone as the Deer lost to North Shore 14-7 this past Friday and held the Mustangs scoreless in the second half.
The Oilers are 7-0 against Deer Park under head coach Tony Heath. The Deer lost to the Oilers 47-7 in their last confrontation in 2011. The last time a Deer Park team beat Pearland was in 1989 (45-6).
It appears that Pearland is entering the post-season with some much needed momentum and Heath will have his chargers focused on the Deer this coming Friday.
The Oilers certainly took care of business against Dobie as the offense picked up 318 total yards while the Pearland defense limited the Horns to only 204 yards.
One of the keys to the game was the Oiler defense caused and recovered three fumbles while allowing only 3-of-12 passing for 83 yards. Dobie managed only 3.2 yards per carry on the ground.
Meanwhile, Pearland took advantage of several short field situations to turn Dobie's miscues into scores.
Sophomore JaColbie Butler put the Oilers on the scoreboard first with a dancing 38-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead following the PAT by Michael Winstead.
With 2:47 left in the second quarter, QB Jake Garner added another score on a 2-yard keeper and a 14-0 halftime lead.
Pearland kicked in gear in the second half as Rasheed Davis gathered in a 12-yard pass from junior QB Kalen Johnson and danced his way into the end zone for a 21-0 advantage.
Hayden Cole, who has been on a scoring binge the past three games, added touchdowns on runs of 6 and 3-yards to vault the Oilers to a 35-0 cushion with 9:16 left in the final stanza.
Connor Heath took controls of the offense in the final scoring drive hitting Adam Saunders on a 9-yard scoring slant to post the final score 42-0.
Garner hit 7-of-9 passing for 49 yards with one interception. Johnson was 8-of-11 for 90 yards and one score. Heath was 1-for-1 for nine yards and a TD. John Gibberman was 1-for-1 for 22 yards.
Butler led all rushers with 81 yards on 10 carries and one TD. Cole had nine carries for 40 yards and two scores. Garner had 10 yards on four totes and a TD.
Trey Smith was leading receiver with five catches for 64 yards. Saunders had three catches for 14 yards and one score. Davis had three grabs for 32 yards and one TD.
