Spring practice for local gridiron teams set in April

PEARLAND — It is hard to believe but football spring practice is just around the corner. Last year -- local teams had banner years.

Pearland (11-3) advanced to the Class 5A Region III Division I finals before coming up short against Hightower, who advanced to the state championship game before losing to Southlake Carroll.

Pearland Dawson (12-3) advanced to the Class 4A Division I state semifinals before falling to five-time state champion Austin Lake Travis.

Manvel (15-1)advanced to the Class 4A Division II state championship game before losing to three-time state champion Aledo.

Friendswood (4-7) struggled with a lot of injuries last year to finish 4-6, but still made the post-season after beating Texas City in the season finale to grab the fourth and final spot from District 24-4A. The Mustangs lost in the bi-district round to Angleton.

After the realignment by the UIL -- Pearland and Manvel will move to District 22-5A that will also include Alvin and the five Pasadena schools.

Dawson and Friendswood will remain in District 24-4A which includes Ball High, Dawson, Texas City, Santa Fe, Baytown Lee and Baytown Goose Creek Memorial.
