Shadow Creek, Dawson players headline All-District 23-6A picks


SHADOW CREEK & DAWSON — It is not surprising that Shadow Creek and Dawson had the most selections for the All-District 23-6A teams after the Sharks captured the 23-6A crown with a 7-0 record and the Eagles finished in second place with a 6-1 mark.

Shadow Creek head coach Brad Butler and his coach staff were selected as the 2022 Coaching Staff of the Year by their coaching peers after posting an 11-1 overall record while advancing to the 6A Region III Div. II area round where they fell to Summer Creek 36-20. They pounded Brazoswood 77-7 in the bi-district round of the post-season.

Shadow Creek senior defensive tackle Theo Randle was named 23-6A Most Valuable Player. Randle had 19 solo tackles, 11 assisted stops, two sacks, 10 QB hurries, and one fumble recovery and was a presence on defense all season.

Dawson junior running back Bryce Burgess was named the 23-6A Offensive Player of the Year. Burgess had another outstanding season as he rushed for 1,023 yards on 141 carries (7.3 yards per carry) and scored 16 touchdowns while he also caught 21 passes for 164 yards and two scores.

Dawson senior defensive tackle Chris Herpin was named the 23-6A Defensive Player of the Year. Herpin registered 34 solo tackles, 18 assisted stops, eight tackles for loss, and three sacks.

Pearland sophomore running back LaDamion McDowell was named 23-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year. McDowell led the Oilers rushing as he had 151 carries for 801 yards and five scores while he also snagged 17 passes for 204 yards and two TDs.

Shadow Creek sophomore outside linebacker Anthony Williams, Jr. was named as the 23-6A Defensive Newcomer of the Year. Williams had 19 solo tackles, three assisted stops, eight tackles for loss, and one caused fumble.

Shadow Creek junior running back Tylik Burton was a first-team offensive selection after he registered 703 yards rushing on 94 carries for six touchdowns while also gaining 90 yards receiving on 14 catches.

Burton is joined by senior OT Tyson Kestner, senior OG Marquis Yancy (u), senior C Marcus Kemp, and senior WR Josh Best (28 catches, 439 yards, 7 TDs).

Named to the All-District defensive first-team for Shadow Creek included junior DE Zion Taylor (17 solo tackles, five assisted stops, six tackles for loss, six sacks, 10 QB hurries), senior DT Mitchel Craney (u) (18 solo tackles, six assisted stops, one TFL, three sacks, one QB hurry), senior OLB Shaun Gilbert (u) (50 solo tackles, 12 assisted stops, nine TFL, one sack, three QB hurries), senior ILB Robert Edmonson (u) (22 solo stops, 12 assisted tackles, nine TFL, three sacks, five QB hurries), senior CB Brian Nelson (10 solo tackles, one assisted stop, 6 INTs), junior S Maurice Williams (u) (30 solo stops, 13 assisted tackles, one TFL, 2 INTs, 3 fumble recoveries, one caused fumble), sophomore kicker Aidan Bui (u) (58-of-62 PATs, 5-of-8 FGs, 73 total points).

Named to the All-District offensive second-team included: junior OT Calvin Peete, junior OG Al McDaniel, senior FB Caleb Washington, senior TB Jacob Washington, and sophomore WR Dane Jones.

Named to the All-District defensive second-team included: senior OLB Scott Koumado, senior ILB Nic King, junior CB Aiden Benjamin, and senior S Corey Swiney.

Pearland had two players selected to the All-District offensive first-team which included: junior FB Juan Marines (33 carries for 134 yards; five catches for 75 yards and 2 TDs) and junior WR Patrick Bridges (32 catches for 479 yards and 6 TDs).

The Oilers had three players chosen for the All-District defensive squad which included: senior ILB Zander Winter (u) (55 solo tackles, 22 assists, 12 TFL, 1 fumble recovery, 1 caused fumble), junior CB Lazarus Range (u) (34 tackles, 14 assists, 2 TFL, 3 INTs, 1 caused fumble), and junior S Ashton Hampton (40 solo stops, 13 assists, 12 TFL, 5 INTs, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 caused fumble).
